Washington Wizards rookie small forward Otto Porter returned to practice Monday for the first time since straining his right hip flexor Sept. 13, CSNWashington.com reported.

Porter, the No. 3 overall pick in the NBA draft this year, was a full participant in practice to the surprise of coach Randy Wittman.

Porter also missed much of the Summer League because of hamstring tightness.

"I thought we were having tryouts or something down there," Wittman said. "I knew he was doing more and more. Doctors looked at him, said it was fine. I didn't know it would be today. ... I'm pleasantly surprised that it was today."

There is no timetable on when Porter will make his NBA debut. He is considered day-to-day.

"It was frustrating at times where I felt like I was getting ready to go over that hump and then something else kind of knocked me back down," Porter said. "Now I can build onto this in the next couple of days. I am looking to get back in shape, stay fine-tuned."

Porter starred at Georgetown, averaging 16.2 points and 7.5 rebounds last season.
