Both teams got off to sluggish starts, but a big second-half surge propelled Virginia Commonwealth to a 69-50 victory over Boston College on Saturday night at the Brooklyn Hoops Winter Festival at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Senior forward Juvonte Reddic had 14 points and eight rebounds to lead four players who scored in double figures for Virginia Commonwealth (10-3).

Senior guard Rob Brandenberg and junior guard Treveon Graham scored 13 points apiece for the Rams. Sophomore guard Melvin Johnson came off the bench to score 13.

Sophomore guard Olivier Hanlan scored a game-high 17 points but committed seven turnovers for Boston College (4-8). Junior forward Ryan Anderson had 13 points and seven rebounds.

The game was close throughout the first half as both teams struggled to mount a sustained run.

Virginia Commonwealth created a little separation when Brandenberg made back-to-back 3-pointers to put the Rams up 16-10 midway through the half, but Boston College came back to claim a 17-16 lead on a layup by junior forward Eddie Odio with 4:53 remaining.

Virginia Commonwealth quickly regained the lead on a jumper by freshman guard JeQuan Lewis, took a 22-17 lead into the locker room at the break and never trailed again.

The Rams started the second half with a 6-0 run and later staged a 14-1 run to go up 49-27 with 10:45 to play. The Eagles cut the deficit to 16 on a couple of occasions later in the half but couldn't get any closer.
