Point guard Brandon Jennings tied Isiah Thomas' franchise record with 16 assists in the first half. Thomas had a 16-assist half against Dallas on Feb. 13, 1985. Jennings finished with 18 assists, one shy of his career high.
Guard Will Bynum added 16 points and center Andre Drummond posted his 27th double-double, second most in the league, with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Minnesota forward Kevin Love has 31 double-doubles.
The Pistons stretched their 13-point halftime lead to 72-54 in the third quarter and still led by 10, 89-79, by the end of the quarter. The Suns then reeled off the first seven points of the fourth quarter to begin their comeback.
Frye tied it at 92-all on a 3-pointer with 6:30 remaining. Pistons rookie guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope responded with five straight points and Detroit held the lead until Tucker's tying 3-pointer with 51.2 seconds left.
Smith then made a 3-pointer with the shot clock about to expire to put the Pistons up 108-105. But Smith fouled guard Gerald Green on a 3-point try with 4.3 seconds left and Green made all three free throws. Smith then drove the lane and scored after a timeout.
Green's desperation shot at the buzzer fell short.
