Ole Miss suspends Marshall Henderson three games

Mercurial shooting guard Marshall Henderson, the leading scorer in the Southeastern Conference last season, was suspended by Ole Miss for the season opener and the first two SEC games.

Henderson averaged 20.1 points last season but he was suspended indefinitely for violating team rules in July.

Henderson, who is also sitting out the exhibition schedule for the Rebels, will not play Nov. 9 against Troy, Jan. 9 against Auburn and at Mississippi State on Jan. 11.

Head coach Andy Kennedy has described Henderson as emotional and energetic. At SEC media days this month he didn't disagree with the comparison to Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel.

"I do think because they're somewhat free-spirited, that they enjoy life and they're certainly guys that bring a lot of passion to their sport, it's an inevitable comparison," Kennedy said.

Kennedy said part of the reinstatement process for Henderson would involve showing maturation emotionally. Teammate Jarvis Summers said earlier this month that Henderson got the message, but allowed "he'll never tone it down."

For Kennedy, growth can be measured without factoring in Henderson's on-court antics and boisterous nature.

"He's been tremendous in his approach and the way he's tried to help young guys," Kennedy said. "I've really challenged him to be a leader on the floor and take responsibility for not only himself but those around him."
