The world of hip hop is still reeling after Kendrick Lamar’s electric name-calling verse on “Control (HOF)” earlier this week. K.Dot made reference to Phil Jackson, and even elicited a response from the 11-time championship coach.
In an interview with DIME, new Lakers swingman, Nick Young, was asked about the Compton rapper as the two have been linked in the past. Turns out Young and Lamar are actually cousins, so obviously Swaggy P was feeling the bars.
Young feels the verse was good for hip hop, and references some of the responses rappers have made, and how geeked he is to hear their lyrical responses on wax. He then throws a little jab at Drake, who was called out by name on the track, for not yet responding to Kendrick.
Dime: There’s a lot of buzz about Kendrick Lamar right now on the West Coast. Many people have been calling you two cousins, what’s the relationship with Kendrick and what did you think of the track “Control” with Big Sean?
NY: We cousins in real life, we family. I think “Control” was good for his side, I think he needed to clear it up a little bit and that’s what he did, he put the fire under these guys. The responses to the track were good, he even got Phil Jackson to respond. The responses from other rappers were cool. Meek Mill put something on Instagram and I wanna see what they rap about next. I still ain’t see Drake do nothing though (laughs).
