Center Josh Smith will be eligible to play for Georgetown from the start of the season, the school announced Wednesday.

Smith played six games last season for UCLA before transferring to Georgetown. He will be eligible to play two seasons for the Hoyas.

"We are excited that the NCAA has approved the waiver for Joshua," Georgetown coach John Thompson III said in a statement. "Now, he has to maintain a high level of commitment on and off the court. He will provide a significant low-post presence for this team."

Smith, 6-foot-10 and 310-plus pounds, made the All-Pac-10 freshman team in 2010-11, when he averaged 10.9 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. He contributed 9.9 points and 4.9 rebounds per game as a sophomore. Last season, in limited minutes during his six-game stint, he averaged 5.2 points and 4.2 rebounds.

Georgetown was unranked in the preseason USA Today Sports coaches poll. The first Associated Press media poll is due to be released next week. The Hoyas open their season Nov. 8 in Seoul, South Korea, against Oregon in a game that will air on ESPN.
