Hampton's balanced scoring, led by redshirt freshman guard Lawrence Cooks' 17 points, was too much for Bethune-Cookman in the host Pirates' 85-52 victory Monday night in a Mid Eastern Athletic Conference game.

Hampton's Du'Vaughn Maxwell, a senior forward, contributed 12 points, six rebounds and seven blocked shots. Sophomore guards Deron Powers (11 points) and Reggie Price (16 points) also scored in double figures for Hampton (5-5 overall and 2-0 in the MEAC).

Bethune-Cookman (2-10 and 0-2) shot only 27.1 percent from the field and produced only two assists with 16 turnovers. The Wildcats did not record an assist until 2:06 remained in the game on Tony Kynard's pass to forward Barry Smith, who made a jumper to cut Hampton's lead to 82-47.

Hampton went on an 18-0 run midway through the first half to take a commanding 36-12 lead with 4:20 left in the first half. Price had eight points and Cooks six during the 18-0 run. Bethune-Cookman did not make a field goal for almost five minutes -- from 8:21 left in the half to the 3:36 mark.

The Pirates maintained at least a 19-point lead from that point into the second half. They pulled away for good on a 13-0 run to take a 68-33 lead with 9:27 left in the game.

Smith, a junior forward, was the only Bethune-Cookman player to reach double figures with 10 points. The Wildcats made only three of 18 from 3-point range. They trailed the entire game.
