During the 2013 MTV Video Awards, A$AP Rocky was on stage with Jason Collins – who famously came out to the media this summer – and introduced Macklemore’s “Same Love” which deals with the subject matter of equality and having an open mind towards people of varying sexuality.
Inadvertently, the rapper gave Collins a strange look while they were introducing Macklemore, and it instantly became meme fodder, and spread all over the internet. Wanting to set the record straight, the Harlem rapper apologized to the NBA big man.
Rocky and Collins introduced Macklemore's performance of "Same Love," a song about accepting people regardless of sexuality, but the rapper seemed visibly uncomfortable, forcing some critics to question his own stance on homosexuality.
Rocky tells The Stashed that it was all a misunderstanding and he is not homophobic. “I’m mad that my facial expressions was like that because I’m not homophobic at all, and that whole thing just came off real homophobic,” said Rocky.
It was never his intention to show up Collins, Rocky says he just found it strange that MTV would pair him up with someone he has seemingly nothing in common with, as the two did not previously know each other. The A$AP Mob member, staunchly states that he is not homophobic.
“I don’t give a f--k if you gay or you not, I just found it odd that MTV wanted to stand me next to this n---a when they are talking about gay people, that’s all. You know what I’m saying?”
